Information for leading a walk

New walk leader volunteers will need to have an online Ramblers Account. You will also need to be added to the Ramblers system as a volunteer. Please request this via the Walks Programme secretary; Julie Hobbs. You can then access any training courses required for your volunteering role.

A risk assessment is a requirement for Ramblers insurance coverage. It can be used as an aide memoir when completing your preparations for a walk. It formalizes what our walk leaders do at the start of a walk when they alert people to the dangers of busy roads, crossing bridges/styles and other potential hazards.

Walks will start at 10:30. Lunch bookable from 10:00 unless otherwise stated in the programme.

East Essex Friends are part of the Ramblers who do short walks over distances of 4 – 5 miles covering the whole of the county and we are always delighted to welcome new members.

Walks are arranged twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays on a year round basis. All walks start at 10:30am and finish between 12:30pm and 1:00pm . Programmes are issued 4 times a year, each covering a 3 monthly period and details can be seen on this website. On most occasions we start and finish at a pub where we can pre-book lunch requirements. Staying for lunch is optional but the majority of attendees stay to enjoy this social aspect of the group.

The walk programmes include a variety of terrains and the leaders try to minimise road walking by keeping to field and woodland footpaths/tracks. As a group we walk at a speed that reflects the general good fitness of our members and we enjoy having new members along providing they feel comfortable with our normal pace.

We, also, try to maintain a strong social element within the group by arranging a variety of events which include days out, evening events, and weekends away.

New walkers are very welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, but are required to join the Ramblers if they wish to walk regularly with the group and receive our programme.

While everyone is welcome on our walks, especally new walkers, we do have a general policy of no dogs on walks aside from registered assistance dogs.
